Instructions to remove video of torture by undressing the housewife
The High Court has directed to remove the video footage of the attempted rape and torture of a housewife in her house in Noakhali's Begumganj Upazila by tying her husband. The chairman of the Bangladesh Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has been instructed to remove the footage by leaving a copy on a CD or pen drive. Besides, the Noakhali Superintendent of Police (SP) has been directed to provide all kinds of security to the woman's family.
After bringing the incident to the attention of the court on Monday, Justice. Mojibur Rahman Mia and Justice Mohiuddin Shamim passed the order along with the virtual bench rule. At the same time, the court has set up a committee to look into whether the police were negligent in taking the victim's statement about the incident.
The committee headed by Noakhali Additional Deputy Commissioner has a district social service officer and principal of Chaumuhani Government SA College. They have been asked to investigate the incident and report to the Registrar of the High Court within 15 working days.
Besides, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Begumganj Police Station has been directed to report to the court on October 28 stating the latest status of the criminal case.
The High Court wanted to know why appropriate legal and departmental action would not be directed against Begumganj Police Station OC and Begumganj Police Station officials for their negligence in protecting the woman and taking swift action against the miscreants.
The Home Secretary, Noakhali Deputy Commissioner and Begumganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) have been asked to respond to the rule within the next two weeks.
The incident was brought to the notice of the High Court today by Supreme Court lawyer Abdullah Al Mamun, accompanied by Z I Khan Panna. Later, AM Amin Uddin, President of the Supreme Court Bar Association, Ruhul Quddus Kajal, General Secretary, Barrister Jyotirmoy Barua, Yadia Zaman, Jamiul Haque Faisal, Rashida Chowdhury Nilu, Tanzeem Al Islam and others expressed their views in the court. Deputy Attorney General Nowroz Russell Chowdhury was the state counsel at the time.
In Noakhali's Begumganj, the victim woman (37) mentioned in the case statement that the video of the housewife being undressed and tortured was spread on social media Facebook as she did not agree to the immoral proposal.
The woman filed two cases with Begumganj police station on Sunday. One filed a case under the Women and Child Abuse Prevention Act, the other under the Pornography Control Act. Nine people have been accused in both the cases.
In the statement of case, the woman alleged that the accused tried to rape her by tying her husband. They videotaped the incident. For a month now, they have been threatening to spread the video, offering him immorality. Not agreeing to the offer, they left the video on Facebook.
Meanwhile, four people including the main accused Badal have been arrested. Badal was arrested from Dhaka by Rapid Action Battalion (RAB). Besides, Delwar's chief Delwar was arrested from Narayanganj with weapons in the incident.
As the culprits were influential, a month passed after the incident but no one opened their mouths for fear. But recently the video spread through social media. After the video went viral, there was a storm of protest on social media. Everyone has demanded justice for this cruel and barbaric incident.
